Sunday Sessions – Gypskazz
6th August 2017
19:00 – 21:00
Gypskazz is an exciting project, fusing Gypsy Jazz and Ska with Balkan, Arabic, Reggae, Rock and Latin influences. Referencing everyone from Beethoven to Charlie Parker, Django Reinhardt to Bad Manners, this is music that takes in a waltz, a tango, and a standard and makes it into something fresh and innovative. Gypskazz also have many of their own original songs and tunes making an interesting and thrilling set.
Gypskazz normally a six piece band, tonight will be downsizing to feature as a trio, “Gypskazz unplugged.”
Players tonight are leader, MelZebra on Alto Saxophone. Mel has a unique and elegant style of playing which has led her to play in Edinburgh to Egypt as a soloist or in a band, as well as featuring on many recorded albums. Accordionist and pianist Andrew Hedges, when not off being a busy composer and theatre MD expertly blends the flavours of Paris and Rio into the Gypskazz pot. Guitarist David Reay loves any excuse to mix up jazz, folk, blues, and rock styles. David is well known around Kent as a guitarist in Jazz ensembles and folk bands. Melzebra, David and Andrew are all composers and songwriters and we will be hearing some of their tunes tonight.
